How to Install BMW PASOFT Scanner on Windows 11 (and Windows 10)
Share
BMW PASOFT (often written PA Soft) is still one of the easiest ways to diagnose a classic BMW like the E46, E39, E38, X5 (E53), X3 (E83) or Z4 (E85) from your own laptop. The software dates from the Windows 7 era, so on Windows 11 and 10 the USB driver needs one extra step to install. This guide walks you through the whole setup, from download to your first scan.
Short on time? Remote setup support is included with every PASOFT order. Email info@bmwpasoft.com with your order number and we'll set it up with you.
What you need
- A Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7 laptop. Mac is not supported.
- The PASOFT USB interface. K+DCAN cables will not work with PASOFT.
- The PASOFT software and driver from your order confirmation page or email.
- A supported BMW: full support for E46, E39, E38, E83, E53, E52 and E85. The E36 / Z3 and E34 (limited functions) connect through the 20-pin adapter.
- A healthy car battery. Use a charger or battery maintainer for long sessions.
Don't have the interface yet? The PASOFT Scanner Kit includes the interface, cable and software.
Step 1: Download and install the software
- Open the download link from your order confirmation page or email and save the file to your computer. The link allows a limited number of downloads, so keep a copy somewhere safe.
- Extract the files if they came in a .zip folder.
- Run the PASOFT installer and follow the prompts. The program shortcut may be named BMWScan140 or similar.
Step 2: Turn off driver signature enforcement (Windows 11 and 10)
Windows 11 and 10 block older drivers that aren't digitally signed. To install the PASOFT USB driver, you need to start Windows once with driver signature enforcement turned off. This only lasts until your next restart.
- Save your work and close other programs.
- Open Settings → System → Recovery (on Windows 10: Settings → Update & Security → Recovery).
- Next to Advanced startup, click Restart now.
- On the blue screen, choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
- When the Startup Settings list appears, press 7 (or F7) for Disable driver signature enforcement.
If your laptop asks for a BitLocker recovery key during this step, have it ready before you start. You can find it in your Microsoft account.
Step 3: Install the USB driver
- Once Windows has restarted, plug the PASOFT interface into a USB port on your laptop.
- Install the USB driver provided with your order. If Windows warns that it can't verify the publisher, choose to install the driver anyway.
- Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button → Device Manager).
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and check that the interface appears there without a yellow warning icon.
You only need to do this once. After the driver is installed, Windows will keep using it after normal restarts.
Step 4: Connect to your BMW
- With the ignition off, plug the interface into the car's diagnostic port. Most E46, later E39, E53, E83 and E85 cars have a 16-pin OBD2 port under the dash. Cars with a round 20-pin port on the driver's side strut tower connect there through the 20-pin adapter.
- Connect the interface to your laptop and open the PASOFT program.
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine off) and click Continue.
- PASOFT identifies the car and lists the modules it finds. Click Close to reach the main screen.
- Click Scan! to read fault codes from every module, or double-click a module such as DME, EWS or SRS to explore it.
Troubleshooting
The driver won't install
Make sure you restarted with driver signature enforcement turned off (Step 2), then install the driver again before restarting. If it still fails, email us and we'll install it for you remotely.
The interface doesn't show in Device Manager
Try a different USB port and avoid USB hubs. If it appears under Other devices or with a yellow warning icon, the driver isn't installed yet. Repeat Steps 2 and 3.
PASOFT won't connect to the car
- Check that the ignition is ON and the interface is plugged in firmly at both ends.
- If your car has a round 20-pin port under the hood, connect there with the 20-pin adapter instead of the cabin OBD2 port.
- Close other diagnostic programs that might be using the interface.
Some modules are missing
Older chassis such as the E36 and E34 support fewer modules and functions than the E46 and E39 generation. Optional equipment your car doesn't have won't show up.
