BMW PASOFT software used for EWS–DME sync on MS43 engines

BMW Cranks But Won't Start After a DME or EWS Swap? How EWS–DME Sync Fixes It

You've swapped in a used engine computer (DME) or immobilizer (EWS) module, everything's plugged in, and the car cranks but won't fire. Or it starts for a second and dies. This is one of the most common problems with classic BMWs, and it's almost always the immobilizer doing its job.

Why it happens

The EWS immobilizer and the DME share a secret code. When you turn the key, EWS sends that code to the DME, and the DME only allows the engine to start if it matches. A used DME or EWS from another car carries that car's code, so the two modules no longer agree. The car cranks normally because the starter still works, but the DME refuses to fuel and fire.

Not the same problem: if the starter doesn't engage at all, or the car worked yesterday and nothing was swapped, the cause may be a key, a ring antenna or another fault. Check the EWS module first: open EWS, click Errors... for fault codes and Keys to see the key status.

Which cars PASOFT can sync

PASOFT supports EWS–DME sync on the Siemens MS43.0 DME. That's the engine computer used with the six-cylinder M54 engine in most:

  • E46 325i, 330i and related models (2001–2006)
  • E39 525i and 530i (2001–2003)
  • E53 X5 3.0i
  • E83 X3 2.5i and 3.0i (early models)
  • E85 Z4 2.5i and 3.0i (early models)

Not sure which DME you have? Click Car ident in PASOFT. It shows the DME type.

How to sync EWS and DME with PASOFT

  1. Install PASOFT and its driver (see our Windows 11 install guide). With the car off, connect the cable to the car and the laptop, then open the program.
  2. Switch the ignition ON (engine off), click Continue, then Close to reach the main screen.
  3. Open the DME: double-click it in the module list, or choose it from the Units menu.
  4. Back up first. Click Read memory. It takes about 20 minutes and saves a .bin file. Keep that file somewhere safe.
  5. Click Reprogramming, then choose the option to reset EWS-DME adaptations and follow the prompts.
  6. Switch the ignition off for a few seconds, then try starting the car.
  7. Open Errors... in the DME and the EWS and clear any leftover codes.

Careful in the DME Reprogramming menu: it also contains other options. Only use the EWS-DME adaptation reset. Don't change anything else in the DME unless you're sure what it does, and note that we don't support odometer changes.

If you get stuck at any step, remote setup support is included with your order. Email us your order number and a screenshot, and we'll walk you through it.

Before you buy a used DME or EWS

  • Match the part number of the module you're replacing.
  • Ask whether the seller has "virginized" or reset it. If not, you'll need a sync like the one above.
  • Keep your old module. You'll need its data if anything goes wrong.

Get set up

The PASOFT Scanner Kit includes the USB interface, cable and PASOFT software, with free remote setup support. If your car has the round 20-pin port under the hood, get the Kit + 20-Pin Adapter Bundle instead. Questions about your car? Email info@bmwpasoft.com with your model and year.
